Metal Genres 101
by Ryukin 08-05-2008, 10:44 AM

Here are a couple videos I made about metal for the absolute n00b non-metalhead loser so they can become cooler and better at life. I'm sure you all have some recommendations or criticism of a song I picked, a detail I included or excluded or a factoid I did or did not get correct. Feel free to let me know, but I don't think the uneducated buffoons of the non-metal world will know the difference really.

...and yes I intentionally opened and closed both videos with music that does not easily fit into 1 genre or even into any of the genres in that video, just to throw people off.

I really liked those videos. I'm going to show them to my girlfriend (I notice your fiance, did the "consulting"), although she would already understand most of it. Still, really nice effort. I look forward to more.

Those are good videos. I think the description of Metalcore was a bit vague with that sentence about 'bridging' and 'reconciling' but otherwise you summed up the stuff real well.

I loved these videos for their analytical look at the genres and great explanations behind them. Loved it so much that after talking with Ryukin I thought it should be a "video article" of sorts.

Cool, it really is a good effort. Hope you can eventually take on a few more genres soon.

thanks guys.

to address the chef, i dont really know anything about doom metal and i just didnt have a good example of power metal on hand.

to address wigg, metalcore is vague and difficult to summarize. thats all i could think of. also i am thinking of doing subgenres of death metal next.

I took the course, but it seems I may have been there before.
For Doom check Earthride.

I have seen the first episode now, but I missed European Thrash such as Kreator/Sodom, the Scandinavian Death Metal; black metal of course started with Venom, Mercyful Fate and Bathory. I really liked the descriptions, I think they fit the music. Good choice of musical examples!

The second episode ... for the Industrial part I think I would have mentioned Ministry and / or Fear Factory. For Nu Coal Chamber and Slipknot are important influences, I guess. Please note I don't want to critisize, but some positive hints to your effort. I liked it.
