| Top Ten Most Metal songs by Non Metal Bands by About2Crash 01-10-2010, 06:25 AM
It is not unknown for metalheads to cross into that unfamiliar territory known as the "not metal". Whether it be the hard rock that were the stepping stones into da heavy stuff or the industrial music that the one red headed chick that works at the Starbucks on the corner that you want to fuck listens to and you start because maybe she will like you if you have something to talk about other than expresso and macchiato......... Where was I? ANYWAYS This is an arbitrary top ten list of ten songs that have that metal spirit whether it be in theme, sound, influence, etc. but aren't quite ready to don the leather and spikes. 10. Muse - Stockholm Syndrome So what does it? The riffing? The over the top dramatic vocals? Or is it that epic chorus? The answer is yes. 9. Queens of the Stone Age - Song for the Dead Wow. Who knew that the band that made such rocking, but realistically easy to like songs like "No One Knows" could write such a hard hitting sludgy slab of rock? The only difference between QOTSA and "real" sludge metal bands is that QOTSA care about songwriting and stuff like that. 8. Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell A song with a rock n roll soul, but with the glam and the extravagance of what would soon become a staple for heavy metal. Killer guitar, motorcycles, demons and devils, it's all there and it's all pretty metal. 7. Smashing Pumpkins - Jelly Belly Billy Corgan was quite the fellow. One of the few stars in the 90's to not hide his love for the metal that had been shunned with the death of glam. While no Maiden of Priest can be found in his riffs, the Sabbath coming from the speakers is emminent and it can't be better represented than in their best "almost metal" song. 6. Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose You might hate that whole Seattle livin, flannel wearing, angst ridden grunge. But trust me when I say that "Jesus Christ Pose" is heavier and more metal than anything that Pantera, the so called "Kings of 90's Metal" did. Take that all you tough guy CFH crew. 5. Melvins - Honeybucket Oh.... Melvins... Often regarded as many as one of the most self important and useless bands on the planet and seen just as many as one of the heaviest bands on the planet. This was what grunge could have and should have been. Heavy... mean... and to the point. 4. The Rolling Stones - Paint it Black Don't get me wrong, this is by all means a rock song. A great rock song in fact. But there is something about that sound just so.... evil. It may be that the first time I heard it was while playing "Twisted Metal Black" on the PS2 all those years ago. It may be that twangy sitar. Maybe it really is Twisted Metal Black. After all, the images were of a priest imaling himself on a crucifix to this song. Yeah, that's probably it. It's also really fucking metal. Ya gotta watch this vid. 3. Faith No More - Malpractice This isn't one of Faith No More's best songs. Hell, I can think of at least five songs off of "Angel Dust" that I prefer. But this is the closest thing to extreme metal that we are going to get in the mainstream, completely tricking people into not realizing that they were listening to a guy shriek and scream louder and with more bite than just about any grim black metaller or death metal droog. Patton is an insane man, and thank God for that. 2. Deep Purple - Child in Time Dear God... this may be the greatest performance by a singer I've ever heard. Sure, the slow intro may not do it for you and you might not be fond of the five minute jam section that takes place inbetween the sections. But the build and chorus and ultimate moment when that power metal wail comes through doesn't just send shivers down spines, it forshadows every belt or falsetto that would ever be uttered from the lips of a headbanger. 1. Europe - The Final Countdown "The Final Countdown" is everything... absolutely everything that is wrong with metal. It's pretentious, it's flamboyant, it's stupidly epic. This is why it is awesome. Nay is there a song that encaptures all the stupid cliches of metal and rolls them all up into one big ball of gay buttsex. However, people need to remember that much of the greatness of metal comes from the "taking the piss" and tongue in cheek attitude that excretes from the tattoo covered pores of the bands and fans. We are in on the joke, which is why we laugh when someone asks us if we worship Satan or how we can listen to music that with talentless screaming. Not only are we in on the joke, but we are in love with it and would defend it to the ends of the earth. These songs may not be metal, but I'll be damned it I don't headbang. Ciao. |

| Haha, I knew that I would have made this list right if you hated it. And I still hold my firm belief that Patton is the best all around rock singer/screamer/jazz crooner/maker of random noises in popular and unpopular music haha. |

| "The Final Countdown" is so pumping....great song. I have always liked the vocalist of Soundgarden.Amazing voice. I would of loved to hear him play in a metal band (RATM doesn't count). I really dig Collective Soul..The song "Heavy" has a decent metal riff. MJ rocked....The solo in "Beat it" could be in a metal song. When I played basketball in highschool we would come out of the locker room to "Eye of the Tiger" while we did our warmups....The adrenaline was flowing like wine. |

| Great idea for an article. When I saw the name of it I knew immediately that Song for the Dead would be on it. I concur with most of the rest of it as well. |

| Faith No More extreme metal in the mainstream??? Lamb of God has quite a few record sales. If they are not extreme enough may I cite Cannibal Corpse and their gold records. |

| Yeah its way bigger than it was even 6-7 years ago. I didn't know anyone who was into "extreme" metal, after this BBQ the other night it sounds like even my small town is packed with metal heads. |

| Keep in mind that "mainstream" should be thought of as top of the charts. Faith No More were one of the biggest bands on MTV after the success of "Epic". And as for the song "Malpractice" in general. I mainly chose it due to seeing it covered by many metal bands today who say what a huge influence it was seeing a song with actual screaming in it from a band who would play MTV. I also really like it. |

| Chris Cornell.. man do I respect that man. His voice can be clear as a bell and harsh like a kitchen machine. I only saw him once, he did his solo stuff and an acoustic version of Black Hole Sun. Goosebumps!! |
