The refined their sound with North From Here, long before the new wave of melodic Death flooded the seen. Check out :56 to 1:56
Seminal moment came with the daring and original Amok. It would be the last full length with their singer and bass player Taneli Jarva, a player so bad ass they needed two people to replace him:
After that, they got a new singer and became more and more commercial sounding. And they talk about suicide and death a lot, in a way an emo at Hot Topic might. It's ok.
I like the way you did this. A good overview of a bands evolution....I will have to take a listen to these songs. ElderMalice and Sheol introduced me to Sentenced. So my first introduction to Sentenced was Frozen and Crimson. Amok didn't strike me as awesome right away but it was like I couldn't stop listening to it.....I need to buy that album. I saw it used once for 5 bucks and I passed it up....doh!
"for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." Jesus
I didn't care about their early stuff, then Jarva started to sing and Lopakka/Tenkula changed the musical direction...I became a fan when I first heard Sentenced in 1995 when they were on tour promoting of Amok as a support band for Tiamat. Awesome show, awesome band.
I was shocked when Jarva left (was kicked out?), but the first record with the new guy (Down) wasn't actually bad, perhaps partly due to Vorph's (of Samael) vocal participation in 3 songs, but then it was a clear downfall.
My tastes have changed quite a bit, though have always remained in the Metal circle. One thing for sure, is that Amok has never aged in the 14 years since I've owned it. It's one of those releases you appreciate more and more as all of these cookie cutter bands come and go.
@Marsallah. Down was pretty good for what it was. I was disappointed in it at first but it grew on me.
